About us

The Swiss Chopin Society of Basel was founded on January 26, 1996.

It is a member of the International Federation of Chopin Societies of the world, which has around 50 chapters. This federation was founded 1985 in Warsaw with the goal of promoting and cultivating contacts and cooperation between the individual member societies. The federation belongs to UNESCO and was admitted to the International Music Council (IMC) in 1989.

The oldest Chopin society was founded already in 1934 in the native country of the composer, in Poland. In its main domicile, the Ostrogski Palace in Warsaw, one can find a notable Chopin museum as well as a collection of manuscripts of the great composer.

Under the patronage of this oldest of all Chopin societies one of the most renowned and most highly considered competitions and cultural events in the world of piano takes place every five years: the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
