The Swiss Chopin Society of Basel was founded
on January 26, 1996.
It is a member of the International Federation of Chopin Societies
of the world, which has around 50 chapters. This federation was founded
1985 in Warsaw with the goal of promoting and cultivating contacts
and cooperation between the individual member societies. The federation
belongs to UNESCO and was admitted to the International Music Council
(IMC) in 1989.
The oldest Chopin society was founded already in 1934 in the native
country of the composer, in Poland. In its main domicile, the Ostrogski
Palace in Warsaw, one can find a notable Chopin museum as well as
a collection of manuscripts of the great composer.
Under the patronage of this oldest of all Chopin societies one
of the most renowned and most highly considered competitions and
cultural events in the world of piano takes place every five years: the
International Chopin Piano Competition
in Warsaw.
